The definition of adventure is an unusual and exciting or daring experience. The form that adventure can take on differs for everyone. Some want to pack their bags and step foot on new and wondrous lands; others may be tempted to skydive, jumping from a plane, free-falling from 12,000 feet, feeling only gravity and the rush of adrenaline.
An adventure could be the woman who had a love for making her own bracelets and necklaces, so she turned her passion into an adventure and started her own online business selling unique and beautiful handcrafted jewellery. It could be volunteering at a bear sanctuary in Romania, or learning to scuba dive because there is no greater adventure than breathing underwater as a hawksbill turtle slowly cruises past you.
The list of ways to experience adventure is endless. When you feel yourself becoming bored and restless with your current life, it may well be time for a new adventure. If I told you that you could do anything you wanted with your life, what would you choose to do?
Most people have big dreams and low expectations. They look at where they are now and what they really want to do and aim for somewhere in the middle. This is called the safe space, it is a little bit different from what they know, so it gives them a sense of adventure, but it isn’t what they really want.
The psychology behind fear
When we are faced with a choice of what we want to do, we can either think of excuses as to why we cannot do something, or we can think of ways that we can do it. We seem to be stuck in this negative mindset, that it is easier to come up with a reason why something can’t be done, rather than thinking of ways that it can be done. From a psychological point of view, the way we think, react and behave are programmed responses that our subconscious minds repeat over and over, solely to keep us safe. The subconscious mind is like a computer: it runs on the programs that are installed and does not think in the same way that our conscious mind does.
Only by changing those thought patterns are you able to change your automatic reactions and responses. If up until now, you have always been the person who aims low and who fears going after what you really want, then don’t worry! It doesn’t have to be that way. You can actively make changes to break those patterns and start something new and exciting!
Start a new adventure
I can assure you that when the time comes for you to take your last breaths on this earth, you will not be thinking about how glad you were that you stayed in that job that you hated, or how you only went half-hearted after the things you really wanted.
